An Indian Social App in 13 Languages: Talk in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and More
Omebly is an Indian social app built in Kolkata for 13 languages. Here is how to set your language and find voice rooms where people talk the way you do.
India doesn’t talk in one language. A family chat might switch from Bengali to Hindi to English in a single sentence, and a group of friends from Chennai, Pune and Kolkata will each have a favourite word for “let’s go”. Yet most social apps still assume everyone thinks in English. Omebly takes a different view. It’s an Indian social app, built in Kolkata, designed so you can use it and talk in the language that feels like home.
Here’s how languages work in Omebly, how to set yours up, and how to find voice rooms where people talk the way you do.
Quick answer: Omebly is a free Indian social app built in-house in Kolkata, with the app built for 13 languages: English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi, Arabic, Russian and Spanish. You can set your language in the app and join live voice rooms in any language. It’s in testing on Android at omebly.com/app/.
Why an Indian social app should speak your language
India has an enormous range of languages; the Languages of India page gives a sense of just how many are spoken every day. For a voice app this matters more than for most, because voice is personal. People joke, comfort and argue best in their first language.
When an app’s menus, buttons and messages are in a language you know well:
- you find your way round faster, without guessing what an icon means,
- parents and grandparents can join in, not just the English-speaking teenager in the house,
- rooms feel local, because people naturally host in the language they’re comfortable with.
Voice makes language easier
Typing in Indian scripts on a phone keyboard can be slow, and many people who speak a language fluently never learnt to type it. Voice removes that barrier. In an Omebly room you just speak, in whatever mix of languages comes naturally, and everyone understands. Voice notes in Moments work the same way. That’s why a voice-first app suits India so well: a grandmother in Siliguri who has never typed a Bengali message can still tell the whole family a story, and a student in Bengaluru can practise Kannada with friends without worrying about spelling.
The 13 languages in Omebly
| Language | Spoken widely in |
|---|---|
| English | Across India and worldwide |
| Hindi | North and central India |
| Bengali | West Bengal, Tripura and Bangladesh |
| Tamil | Tamil Nadu and Puducherry |
| Telugu | Andhra Pradesh and Telangana |
| Marathi | Maharashtra |
| Kannada | Karnataka |
| Malayalam | Kerala |
| Gujarati | Gujarat |
| Punjabi | Punjab |
| Arabic | The Gulf and the Middle East |
| Russian | Russia and Central Asia |
| Spanish | Spain and Latin America |
Ten of these are major Indian languages. Arabic, Russian and Spanish are there for friends and family abroad, including the many Indians living and working in the Gulf, so a cousin in Dubai can use the app in the same comfort as you.
How to set your language in Omebly (step by step)
- Download the Android test app from omebly.com/app/ and install it.
- Sign in with Google and add your date of birth, name and photo. Omebly is for ages 16 and over.
- Open Me, then Settings.
- Tap Language and choose from the 13 options.
- Go back to the home screen. Menus, buttons and labels now appear in your chosen language.
- Change it any time by repeating the same steps, which is handy if you share a phone with family.
Tips for mixed-language families
- Set the app in the language of the person who uses it most.
- In a group chat, agree a “main” language but don’t be strict. Hinglish and Benglish are perfectly welcome.
- Voice notes in Moments are a lovely way for older relatives to share, since nobody has to type.
Finding rooms in your language
The app language changes the interface. The conversation in a room is up to the people in it, and that’s where a regional community comes alive.
Look at room titles and announcements
Hosts usually name their rooms in their own language, such as a Bengali adda, a Tamil film chat or a Punjabi music night. Read the title and announcement before you take a seat.
Use rooms near you
The rooms near you section shows conversations happening close to home, which often means people who speak your language and share your local jokes.
Host your own
Can’t find a room in Marathi or Malayalam right now? Start one. Pick from 8, 10, 15 or 24 seats, choose a theme, and schedule it so friends get a reminder. Share it to WhatsApp with a preview card and your group can tap straight in. Our guide on how to host a voice party room covers the details.
More than voice: features that work in any language
Some of the best Omebly features need no translation at all:
- Ludo and chess inside voice rooms, free with no betting. See Ludo and chess with voice chat.
- Movie night, where the room owner plays videos so everyone can watch, talk and react together.
- Moments with photos, voice notes, short videos, reactions and comments.
- Messages, group chats and video calls with friends.
- Families, groups with their own chat and room.
- Relationships such as best friend, close friend and sibling, shown as animated bond rings. Couple and crush links are 18+ only.
Built in India, in-house
Omebly is designed and built in-house by Omebly in Kolkata. We use Flutter, and its internationalisation support lets one app show the right text for each language, including right-to-left scripts such as Arabic. Real-time servers keep voices in sync so a conversation between Kolkata and Kochi feels natural.
Building it in-house means the people who hear your feedback are the people who fix it. If a translation feels stiff or a word is wrong in your language, tell us through the feedback option in the app and we’ll improve it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming everyone in a room speaks your language. Check the room title first.
- Leaving the app in a language you don’t read well. If a family member set it up for you, switch it to your own language in settings.
- Correcting someone’s grammar in public. Rooms are for chatting, not exams.
- Sharing personal details because someone “is from your town”. Stay as careful as you would with anyone online. Our safety guide explains reporting and blocking.
