How to remove a background from a photo

  1. Add your image. Choose a file, drop it on the page or paste it. It stays on your device.
  2. Wait a moment. The background is removed automatically, with clean edges around hair and fur.
  3. Touch it up if needed. Use Erase and Restore to fix any spot, and pick a new background if you like.
  4. Download. Save a full-size PNG with transparency, or a JPG or WebP.

Hair-level accuracy

An AI model built for fine edges finds the subject, and edge colours are cleaned so no halo of the old background is left.

Private by design

The AI runs in your browser. Your photo isn’t uploaded or seen by anyone.

Manual touch-up

Soft Erase and Restore brushes with zoom, undo and redo for pixel-perfect results.

New backgrounds

Transparent, any colour, a blur of the original or your own picture, saved at full size.

FAQ

Background Remover: questions people ask

Is the Background Remover free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no credits and no limit on how many images you use. You also get the full-size image, not a small preview.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The background is removed by a small AI model that runs inside your browser, so your photo never leaves your device. The model itself is downloaded once from Hugging Face, a public AI model library (with Omebly as the backup), and then kept in your browser, which makes the next images faster. That download never includes your photo.

How accurate is it?

It uses ISNet, a model trained to find the main subject and its fine edges, so hair, fur and soft edges are kept. The edge colours are then cleaned so the old background doesn’t show as a halo. If anything is missed, the Erase and Restore brushes fix it in seconds.

Why does the first image take longer?

The first time, your browser downloads the background remover (about 91 MB). After that it is kept in your browser, so later images start right away. On devices with GPU access in the browser, removing a background takes about a second.

Which images work, and how big?

JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF images up to 30 MB. Photos larger than 12 megapixels are scaled to 12 megapixels so the tool runs smoothly on phones.

Can I put a new background behind the subject?

Yes. Keep it transparent, pick any colour, blur the original background, or add your own picture as the background, then save as PNG, JPG or WebP.
