How to get a colour palette from an image
- Add your image. Choose a file, drop it on the page, paste it, or paste a link to it. It stays on your device.
- See the colours instantly. Dominant, secondary and all detected colours appear with how much of the image each covers.
- Copy what you need. Click a colour to copy its HEX code, or open a dominant colour for RGB, HSL and its pixel count.
- Export or save. Copy the palette as CSS, JSON, Tailwind or SCSS, download a PNG, or save it in this browser for later.
Real colour clustering
K-Means groups similar pixels so you get the colours that actually shape the image, not thousands of near-identical shades.
Private by design
Everything runs in your browser. Your image isn’t uploaded or seen by anyone, and saved palettes never leave this browser.
Ready for your code
Export CSS variables, JSON, a Tailwind colours block or SCSS variables in one click.
Saved palettes
Keep palettes you like, rename them, search them and open them again whenever you need them.
Palette Generator: questions people ask
Is the Palette Generator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you check.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The image is read and analysed inside your browser, so it never leaves your device. Saved palettes are kept in this browser only, with a small preview, and you can delete them at any time.
How are the colours found?
The tool groups similar pixels together with K-Means colour clustering, then measures how much of the image each group covers. Colours covering more than 5% are dominant, colours between 0.5% and 5% are secondary, and every distinct colour is listed under All detected colours.
Which image types work?
JPG, PNG, WEBP and AVIF images up to 10 MB. You can choose a file, drop it on the page, paste it from your clipboard, or paste a link to an image.
Why does an image link sometimes not work?
Some websites don’t let other pages read their images. If a link fails, save the image to your device and upload it instead.
How do I use the colours in my project?
Click any colour to copy its HEX code, or open a dominant colour to copy its RGB or HSL value. The export panel gives the whole palette as CSS variables, JSON, a Tailwind config or SCSS variables, or as a PNG swatch strip.
